Physical Form: A creature that looks like a fractured, floating mass of obsidian glass and dozens of wide, jawless human mouths. Its physical form is constantly vibrating at a frequency that shatters stone, yet it makes absolutely no noise. The Tragic Loop: The creature is experiencing excruciating sensory overload from the transition through the Fray, but the Drift stripped it of the ability to make a sound. It attacks by violently absorbing the sound around it—stealing the voices, heartbeats, and even the sounds of footsteps from its prey. It targets screaming victims, hoping that if it steals a loud enough scream, it will finally be able to vocalize its own agony. But the void inside it instantly swallows the stolen sounds, leaving it in eternal, deafening silence. Reason for Breakage: The Starving Silence forms in the Glass Expanse where light has shattered the same way too many times in the same place — typically near Echo Ruins or an abandoned prism-grove. Its many mouths cannot speak because the Pattern broke there in a frequency the throat cannot reach. Knowledge Fragmentation Principle scholars cite the Silence as evidence that some truths are not merely incomplete but actively self-cancelling.

Sound Meter. A visible mechanic. The Sound Meter starts at 1 and rises by 1 each time the party shouts, casts a verbal spell, conducts loud table strategy mid-combat, or uses a sound-based ability. Max 6. Sound Meter bonus damage: 1=+0, 2=+2, 3=+4, 4=+6, 5=+8, 6=+10. The bonus damage applies to ALL of the creature's attacks.
Feed on Sound. Each time the Sound Meter increases, the Starving Silence regains 5 HP and immediately gains the new Sound Meter bonus damage.
Impossible Silence. All sound within 30 ft of the creature is muted and distorted. Players speaking within this aura instinctively lower their voices. The creature always knows the location of any creature that makes noise.
Multiattack. The Starving Silence makes one Obsidian Slam or Shard Lash, then may use Silent Scream if recharged.
Obsidian Slam. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 3d8 bludgeoning + Sound Meter bonus. The creature drops from above like a falling boulder. On hit deal 3d8 bludgeoning damage + Sound Meter bonus damage. If the target is pushed into a wall or obstacle, add an additional 1d8 bludgeoning damage.
Shard Lash. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, one creature. Hit: 2d10 slashing + Sound Meter bonus. A jagged shard tears free from the creature's body and launches across the battlefield. On hit deal 2d10 slashing damage + Sound Meter bonus damage. On a critical hit the target begins Bleeding (1d6 damage at the start of each turn until healed or stabilized).
Silent Scream (Recharge every 3 rounds). Each target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw (30 ft cone). half damage Hit: 4d10 psychic + Sound Meter bonus. Every mouth opens simultaneously. No sound emerges. The pressure alone tears through the battlefield. 30-foot cone. DC 15 CON save; failure 4d10 psychic damage + Sound Meter bonus damage, success half. Cannot be used while Vulnerable.
Tactics. The Starving Silence is not malicious — it is desperate. It pursues the loudest creature, drinks the noise, and grows. It will use Silent Scream the moment the Sound Meter passes 3 and there are at least two targets in cone range.
Counterplay. Quiet: if the party intentionally reduces the Sound Meter to 0 through silence magic, environmental solutions, or coordinated whispered-only play, the creature becomes Vulnerable for one full round. While Vulnerable: all damage against it is doubled, Silent Scream cannot be used, and AC drops from 16 to 12. • Restraint Wins: the entire encounter rewards player restraint — gestural casting, silent strategy, whispered targets, hand signals, and pre-arranged battle codes effectively starve the creature.
Designed for ~Scales with the Sound Meter — designed as a Hard / Deadly encounter for a 4–8 player mid-level party. damage / round • final boss
